Spine Care

There has been an increase in the number of people suffering from neck pain, thanks to the poor posture while using laptops, computers and smartphones. The measures for neck pain relief include simple, short-term treatments such as RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation) to long-term therapies such as massage, various neck exercises to strengthen the muscles in the neck and following certain lifestyle habits like drinking adequate amounts of water.

People experience back pain generally either in the upper back, mid-back or the lower back region. Back Pain usually occurs due to straining of the muscles, degenerative tissues, herniated disc, sacroiliac joint disease, arthritis, fracture in the lumbar vertebrae and other factors. If the pain exists for a prolonged period of time, spreads to the arms or legs, or the patient experiences weakness in the limbs, the person should immediately consult a back & neck pain specialist.

Procedures for Spine Care at Kingsway Hospitals

Artificial Disc Replacement: The spine is made up of vertebrae, each of which is separated from the other by a soft cushioning material known as the discs These discs act as natural shock absorbers. In this procedure, the painful disc which is causing chronic back pain is replaced with an artificial disc without affecting the spine’s natural anatomical structure to ptovide relief from the pain. It is an alternative to spinal fusion surgery.

Total Disc Replacement: Also known as Lumbar Disc Replacement, this procedure involves replacing the damaged or defective disc with an artificial disc which mimics the natural moevement in order to stabilize the spine, reduce pain and minimize inflammation.

Cervical Disc Replacement:An artifical cervical disc is inserted between two vertebrae in the neck to replace a damaged disc.

Lumbar Decompression: This helps reliece the pain caused due to sciatica, which is also known as nerve root pinching or radiculopathy.

Discectomy: This process removes the damaged portion of a herniated spinal disc, performed when conservative, non-surgical treatments have been futile.

Lumbar Fusion: This is performed to alleviate the pain at a vertebral segment, usually caused due to conditions such as spondylolisthesis.

Lumbar Puncture: The doctor inserts a needle between the two vertebrae in the lower back to extract a sample of the cerebrospinal fluid for analysis.

Surgery: This is the standard treatment to remove spinal tumors, which may be followed by radiation therapy or chemotherapy.

Chemotherapy: This involves taking some drugs either orally or by injection to kill the cancer cells or eliminate the pain.

Joint Care

The branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of the conditions afflicting the musculoskeletal system, including the disorders of joints, bones, ligaments, tendons and nerves is known as Orthopaedics.

Kingsway Hospitals is one of the best joint, spine and trauma care hospital in India, and endeavors to provide world-class orthopedic treatment for the entire spectrum of joint disorders and orthopaedic problems. Our orthopaedic surgeons are adept at performing a wide range of joint replacement and laparoscopic surgeries.

Total Knee Replacement: Known in medical parlance as Arthroplasty, this surgical procedure involves replacing the severely diseased or deformed knee joint by an artificial material. The ends of the tibia and femur bones are replaced with metal shell and plastic components.

Bilateral Knee Replacement: Both the knees are operated on and replaced in a single operation, involving a single administration of anaesthesia, single hospitalization and recovery period.

Total Hip Replacement: The damaged sections of the hip joint are replaced by artificial materials made of metal and hard plastic, and is resorted to if non-conservative treatments have failed to show the desired effects.

Shoulder Replacement Surgery: It is performed to relieve the joint pain in the shoulders.

Elbow Replacement: A particularly complicated process due to the presence of numerous moving parts balancing each other with utmost precision to control the movements of the forearm, our orthopaedic surgeons at Kingsway Hospitals possess the required expertise to perform such complicated surgeries too.

ACL Reconstruction: The injuries in the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) are typically sustained while playing high-intensity sports such as basketball and soccer. ACL Reconstruction replaces this major ligament of the knee.

Ankle-Brachial Index: It is a non-invasive method in which the doctor compares the blood pressure measured at the ankle with that of the arm. This is done to check the risk of peripheral artery disease. A low index number indicates clogging of arteries in the legs which can be a precursor for heart diseases, circulatory problems and stroke.

Arthroscopy: This term literally means “to look within the joint”. As the name suggests, this surgical procedure is used to visualize, diagnose and treat problems inside a joint with the help of an arthroscope, a pencil-sized instrument containing a small lens and lighting system at one end.
